Requirements

You don't need to spend any money to develop with Flurr. All you need is some free software and and some other stuff which I'll describe below.

Connecting to the API

In order to successfully connect to any of the APIs which Flurr is using you need to make sure you can access the internet and be able to go on (depending on which API wrapper you use): If you're using any of these networks then connecting to their APIs will be fine.

Development Environment

To write .NET code you'll need some software. Some free alternatives are listed below:
  • Visual Basic 2008 Express - Microsoft has a free version of Visual Basic.NET that you can use to develop your .NET applications.
  • Visual C# 2008 Express - Maybe you prefer C# to Visual Basic. Microsoft's got a free version of that, too.
  • SharpDevelop - Maybe you can't stand Microsoft, or you just don't like Visual Studio. SharpDevelop is a free, open-source development environment for .NET applications. Very highly recommended, and it has some features that Visual Basic Express does not.
You can choose either but I would recommend Visual Basic 2008 Express as it is straight from Microsoft and that is the kind of software I used to make Flurr (except I used the paid Professional edition, not the free Express one - that doesn't really matter in your case). For both, you'll need the .NET Framework 3.5 (one on which Flurr was build on). Although you can use the 2010 editions of Visual Basic and Visual C# IDEs, I would recommend using the 2008 ones as the project was made using 2008 editions. If you are using 2010 editions (or above) then you'll have to convert the 2008 project files to 2010 (there is a dialog window for that!), which I don't recommend.

Getting the Source Code

I recommend using TortoiseSVN, which is a free, open-source Subversion client. If you've worked with source code control systems before, learning Subversion is not very hard and TortoiseSVN makes it a breeze to work with. You can also just go to the "Source Code" tab at the top of the screen and download the latest changeset as a .zip file if you like.

The Right Attitude

Flurr is free software provided to the community at no charge. Constructive criticism is always welcomed as I want to make the library as good as I reasonably possibly can. Please remember that I spend my time and energy on this project, in my free time.
